Process Recording Checklist Recording a process is an important activity that allows documenting the process and associated events by using recording tools, equipment and systems. For example, recording the course of a project meeting helps meeting participants to focus on important topics during and after the meeting. This Checklist explains how to record a process in three steps.

  1. Overview.
    • Definition. Process recording is a way of focusing on how a certain process is developed and describing thoughts, beliefs and actions of people involved in the process. It is a mechanism of creating and keeping process data for further review, analysis, and lessons learned. Process recording helps document process changes and focus on the process content.
    • Key Steps. Process recording can be regarded as a continuous procedure that lasts throughout the process development cycle. There are several steps to carry out this procedure. Below in this checklist we describe the steps.

  3. Preliminary Work.
    • Gather and review all existing documentation about your process.
    • Define what problems the process is supposed to address.
    • Identify inputs and outputs of the process.
    • Determine process implementation steps.
    • Have a plan of how the process is supposed to be carried out.
    • Define process resource requirements (such as utilities, technology, machinery, manpower, raw materials).
    • Find out how much time is supposed to spend on running the process.
    • Prepare necessary recording equipment and systems (such as notebook, recorder, camera, microphone etc.).
  4. Recording a Process.
    • Start using equipment and systems to record the process and associated events.
    • Keep track of the process implementation plan.
    • Make notes about any events that have not been added to the plan.
    • Use your notebook to write down your own thoughts and feelings regarding the process.
    • Record thoughts, beliefs and actions of people involved in the process.
    • Create a flowchart describing process evaluation and development.
